Reede (22) loopt al een tijd mee in het American Football en wordt al geruime tijd gezien als één van Europa’s grootste talenten op zijn positie. Reede, die op dit moment aan zijn derde professionele seizoen in het buitenland bezig is en dit seizoen onder contract staat bij het Duitse Düsseldorf Panther wat uitkomt in de GFL (German Football League), had de uitnodiging voor de XFL niet zien aankomen zegt hij zelf.

“Voor mij is dit een enorme confident boost en laat het zien dat al het harde werken zijn vruchten afwerpt. Ik had een redelijk stabiel seizoen in Oostenrijk afgelopen jaar en sloot deze mooi af met een goede wedstrijd in Graz, maar om dan deze uitnodiging te ontvangen laat zien dat ik toch op de radar sta in de VS en dat is supergaaf.” XFL is de Amerikaanse profcompetitie welke functioneert als “development” league voor de NFL (National Football League) en CFL (Canadian Football League) maakt zijn herstart in februari 2023 na het door COVID-19 afgebroken seizoen in 2020.

Reede stond eerder ook al in de belangstelling van de XFL maar verder dan wat gesprekken kwam het toen niet. Ditmaal is hij uitgenodigd voor een zogeheten ‘Showcase’, een testdag waar verschillende fysieke testen worden afgelegd om te zien welke spelers het in zich hebben om op dit podium te presteren. Reede is tot zover bekend de eerste en enige Europeaan uitgenodigd voor deze Showcases. De XFL houdt zes Showcases verdeeld over zes verschillende plekken in de Verenigende Staten. Reede zal zijn kwaliteiten laten zien aan alle XFL-teams op 19 juni in Florida.

Ondanks dat de uitnodiging voor de XFL bij Reede uit onverwachte hoek kwam, heeft hij zich wel al goed kunnen voorbereiden voor dit soort testdagen. Reede heeft namelijk zijn ‘Off-Season’ training gedaan bij een tweetal top faciliteiten in Minneapolis. Hier trainde hij samen met verschillende spelers uit de topcompetities in de Verenigende Staten en Canada.

Reede: “Mijn voorbereiding op dit seizoen in Minneapolis heeft mij enorm geholpen. Ik ben als een compleet ander soort atleet teruggekomen en voel me zowel fysiek als mentaal een veel betere atleet. Tuurlijk is het lastig om je binnen drie weken voor te bereiden op zo’n testdag, zeker als je midden in je seizoen zit hier maar ik weet dat de basis is gelegd in Minneapolis en dat ik vanuit mijn trainingen daar een goede test dag kan neerzetten.”

Over verwachtingen wil Reede niet praten maar het doel is duidelijk: “Het is al een enorme blessing om überhaupt deze uitnodiging te krijgen. Dit is een echte once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Dit pakken ze mij nooit meer af. Ik ga alles geven en dan zien we wel verder. Tuurlijk zou het gaaf zijn om de eerste Nederlander én Europeaan in deze competitie te worden. Daar doe ik het natuurlijk voor, maar eerst focus ik mij volledig op deze testdag en daarna zien we wel verder.”

Reede vertrekt donderdag 16 juni richting Florida om zich voor te bereiden op de XFL Showcase en zich goed te kunnen acclimatiseren aan het broeiende klimaat in Florida. Volg zijn reis via @iamdr8.

Reede (22) has been around for a while in American Football and has long been considered one of Europe’s greatest talents at his position. Reede, who is currently in his third professional season abroad and this season is under contract with the German Düsseldorf Panther which plays in the GFL (German Football League), did not see the invitation to the XFL coming, he says.

“For me this is a huge confidence boost and shows that all the hard work is paying off. I had a pretty stable season in Austria last year and ended it nicely with a good game in Graz, but then to receive this invitation shows that I am on the radar in the U.S. and that is super cool.” XFL is the American professional league which functions as a “development” league for the NFL (National Football League) and CFL (Canadian Football League) makes its restart in February 2023 after the season aborted by COVID-19 in 2020.

Reede was also previously in the interest of the XFL but did not get further than some talks then. This time he has been invited to a so-called ‘Showcase’, a test day where various physical tests are taken to see which players have it in them to perform on this stage. Reede is as far as we know the first and only European invited to these Showcases. The XFL is holding six Showcases spread over six different places in the United States. Reede will show his qualities to all XFL teams on June 19 in Florida.

Although the invitation to the XFL came to Reede from an unexpected source, he has been able to prepare himself well for these test days. Reede did his ‘Off-Season’ training at two top facilities in Minneapolis. Here he trained with several players from the top leagues in the United States and Canada.

Reede: “My preparation for this season in Minneapolis has helped me tremendously. I came back as a completely different athlete and feel both physically and mentally a much better athlete. Sure it’s hard to prepare for such a test day in three weeks, especially when you’re in the middle of your season here but I know that the foundation was laid in Minneapolis and that from my training there I can put down a good test day.”

Reede doesn’t want to talk about expectations but the goal is clear: “It’s already a huge blessing to get this invitation at all. This is a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They will never take this away from me again. I’m going to give everything and then we’ll see. Of course it would be cool to be the first Dutchman and European in this competition. That’s what I’m doing it for, but first I’ll focus on this test day and then we’ll see.”

Reede leaves for Florida on Thursday, June 16, to prepare for the XFL Showcase and acclimate well to the sweltering climate in Florida. Follow his journey via @iamdr8.
